Congratulations team for a successful shoreline clean up!
For several years now, Toronto Zoo staff and volunteers have participated in one of the greatest events to help keep Canadian wildlife safe and keep our shorelines healthy. This year the Toronto Zoo’s Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup took place at Rouge Beach Park Marshes -about a 10 minute drive from the Zoo!
With the help of twenty-six Rouge Valley community members, Toronto Zoo employees & Superstore (Loblaw) staff over 300 kg of garbage was clean out of our Lake Ontario waters!
Some of the most interesting items we found included:
a completely intact sound system, wooden skids, & car headlights
Some of the most abundant items we found included:
plastic bottles, fishing line, bait containers, coffee cups, take-out food containers and over 100,000 cigarette butts!!
The is an annual event that takes place every September, so if you missed this year mark it down in your calendar for 2014!
