massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus)

Easteren massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus)

Join Adopt-A-Pond at the Cottage Life Show April 5th to the 7th!

You can get up close and personal with Ontario’s only venomous snake the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus)! Ontario, being the most southern province, has the greatest variety of snake species compared to any other province in Canada. It is home to 17 species of snakes, varying in size, color, habitat and range. The Eastern Massasauga is one of the many unique and fascinating reptiles living here in Ontario. Like other rattlesnakes, the Eastern Massasauga will stand its ground and not flee when first approached, its camouflage is its best defense. The snake will warn you with its rattle if you’re getting to close and will strike in defense if it feels threatened. But beware, other Ontario species will shake their tails to confuse predators and imitate the Massasauga! This species of snake is not particularly aggressive, bites are rare, and are most likely to occur when someone has deliberately grabbed the snake or has accidentally stepped or sat on it.  The Eastern Massasauga is a Threatened species, both Federally and Provincially, under COSEWIC and the OMNR. Today, the range of the Eastern Massasauga has been much reduced and only encompasses four areas in the province: Eastern Georgian Bay, the Bruce Peninsula, the Wainfleet bog (in the Niagara peninsula), and the Ojibway Prairie Complex in Windsor.

Stop by our both at the Cottage Life Show and check out this rare and unique animal!
